FAQ's
Why should I have my chimney swept ? Any time wood is burnt in a stove or a fireplace, soot and creosote are produced. Soot is made up of sticky black carbon particles, and creosote is an oily, flammable liquid tar. These by-products cling to the inside of a chimney and can easily cause a chimney fire if allowed to build up. When we sweep your chimney we remove these flamable substances along with any other debris that may have fallen into your chimney, greatly reducing the risk of chimney fire. Your fire/stove will perform much more efficiently when the chimney has been swept, reducing the amount of fuel that you will use to keep warm. After each sweep a certificate is issued to confirm that your chimney has been swept. This may be required by your insurance company or landlord.
How long does it take ? The average sweep can take up to 30 minutes depending on access and the condition of your stove and chimney. Sweep & Service: 30-45 minutes, provided that we have all of the required parts on our vehicle. If we have to order in any special parts parts for your stove, a return visit may be required.
What if parts of my stove is broken or in need of replacement ? If you send us a picture via email of what needs replacing, we can check to see if we have the parts in stock, and if not we can order from the manfacturer. We will always contact you to advise the price and get your approval before ordering.
Arrival Times. Whilst we give an indication that your sweep will be between 9am-1.00pm or between 2.00pm - 6.00pm on a given date, this cannot be guaranteed due to the unpredictable nature of chimney sweeping. Unforseen difficulties may delay us at anytime, resulting in the shedule for the day being disrupted. Obviously, we try to avoid this happening, but when it does we may have to re-schedule your appointment and our sweep will contact you directly to arrange this. We regret that we cannot provided more precise ETA's during the working day. If you have any questions or queries please do not hesitate to contact us 07510 129924.
How often should I have my chimney swept ? For chimneys that are used only during the winter months, once per year will be sufficient. But if burning for longer periods or when burning coal, twice per year is advised.
Do you provide chimney inspections & reports? Yes, we can do a full camera assessment of your chimney and provide a report highlighting any safety issues requiring attention. We will also provide a full cost estimate for making your your chimney safe. The charge for a chimney inspection with report is £150.00.
What information do I need to book a service ? For servicing we will require the manufacturer, model, type and age of your stove plus the serial number where possible. If you do not have this information, we ask that you take photos of your stove and submit them through our booking form. We will contact you if we have any questions.
When do I pay ? You can pay by card when we book your sweep, or you can pay in cash on the day of your sweep. We do not take card payments on the doorstep.
When should I have my chimney swept ? Generally, after the stove burning weather has passed. However, if there is no bird guard on your chimney, then sweeping should be left until after June when most birds will have finished nesting and any nests can be safely removed. If you do have a bird guard on your chimney, then sweeping can be done at any time.
How do I prepare for my sweep ? Please make sure the stove/fire has not been used for at least 12 hours prior to the sweep appointment. If you are able to empty the stove/fire of ash and unburnt fuel this would also be appreciated. Please ensure there is a clear passage to the appliance, and that any ornaments or other fragile items are removed from the area. We will cover carpets and soft furnishings; however if you know there is the potential for lots of soot i.e. the chimney has not been swept for some time, it would be a wise precaution to clear the room as much as possible.
Cancellations. Should you need to cancel your sweep appointment, please let us know as soon as possible by ringing 07510 129924 or by sending an email to admin@southweststoves.co.uk. In the event of a cancellation by the customer giving less than 24 hrs notice, or if it should not be possible to gain accees to your property at the scheduled time, a call out fee of £35 will be payable.
Do I get a Sweeping Certificate? Yes, our Sweep submits his report to our office when he has completed the job, and we prepare the Sweeping Certificate which is sent to you by email.
